Indian High Commission – Power of Attorney Requirements
If you are preparing a Power of Attorney for India, please read the following carefully.
These requirements are based on the official rules of the Indian High Commission and VFS Global.
Three documents must be notarised:
- The Power of Attorney itself
- The passport of Witness 1 (self-certified by Witness 1)
- The passport of Witness 2 (self-certified by Witness 2)
Rules for Preparing a Power of Attorney for India
- The signing page of the Power of Attorney must be signed by you and two witnesses.
- Include the following details for each witness on the signing page:
- Full name
- Address
- Date of birth
- Passport nationality and type
- Passport issue date
- Passport expiry date
- Passport number
- Do not include a section for the Attorney to sign. The Indian High Commission will reject any POA that includes a blank acceptance section.
- Glue a passport-sized photo of yourself next to your signature on the signing page.
- Sign across the photo once attached.
- Leave the bottom half of the signing page blank – reserved for the India House legalisation stamp.
- Witnesses may sign on the same page as you, or on a separate following page showing their full details.
- Witnesses must self-certify their ID copies (passport and address proof) by signing each page.
- Do not abbreviate names. Write all names in full (e.g. Suresh Kumar Jagnesh, not Suresh K. Jagnesh).
- Provide proof of address for both witnesses (utility bill or UK photo driving licence) – self-certified by each witness.
- If a witness is not a UK passport holder, include a copy of their Residence Permit, self-certified by that witness.
- If the POA refers to a court case, attach a notarised copy of the relevant court document showing the case reference number.
- Use witnesses who are British or Indian passport holders only. The Indian High Commission will likely reject POAs witnessed by any other nationality.
Our Notary Service Process
- Review of your draft Power of Attorney – we confirm it complies with Indian High Commission and VFS requirements.
- Notarisation of all three documents: the POA and the two witness passport copies.
- Optional Apostille service available if required by authorities in India.
- You then submit your notarised documents to VFS Global or the Indian High Commission.
