Consular legalisation for Egypt

Notarisation of documents for Egypt

LEGALISATION AND APOSTILLE REQUIREMENTS

For documents to be used in Egypt, the general process is to have them legalised by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) with an Apostille, followed by further attestation at the Egyptian Consulate. Educational documents are an exception—they do not require notarisation or an FCDO Apostille, but must first be attested by the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau (ECEB) before being submitted to the Consulate for legalisation.

For commercial documents, there are two possible routes:

  • Notarisation, followed by FCDO Apostille, then submission to the Egyptian Consulate for attestation; or
  • Notarisation, then attestation by the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC), and finally submission to the Egyptian Consulate for legalisation (no FCDO Apostille needed for this route).
Some types of commercial documents may require prior EBCC attestation before the Consulate will accept them for legalisation. The requirements for private documents and other categories may vary, so it is important to confirm the correct process before submission.

TIME AND FEES

The consular fee is £125 per commercial document, or £183.80 per commercial document if processed through the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce, and £47 per private document. For UK educational documents, the ECEB disbursement fee is £50 per document, with an additional £82.80 per application for the EBCC. Processing time at the Consulate is typically 2–3 working days for private and commercial documents, while ECEB attestation for educational documents may take 12–20 working days due to verification requirements. Payment is accepted by card only. Submission hours are 10:00 am – 12:30 pm and collection is 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
