Membership of the Notaries Society
We are proud members of the Notaries Society, the representative body for all general notaries public practising in England and Wales. Founded in 1882, the Society plays a vital role in upholding the standards of the profession, supporting the education of notaries, and ensuring continuing professional development for its members.
The Role of the Notaries Society
The Society works actively to protect and promote the interests of notaries public. It regularly engages with government bodies, including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Legalisation Department, to represent the profession and provide feedback on matters affecting notarial practice.
In addition, the Society contributes to consultations on proposed legislation that could impact notaries. By doing so, it ensures that the unique role and responsibilities of notaries are properly understood and safeguarded.
International Representation
The work of the Society is not limited to the United Kingdom. It represents the notarial profession abroad, maintaining strong relationships with notarial organisations across Europe and beyond.
The Society is a founding member of the World Organisation of Notaries (W.O.N.), giving it a global platform. It also holds observer status with the International Union of Latin Notaries. Through these links, the Society takes part in international discussions and exchanges ideas with other notarial associations, helping to promote and protect professional standards worldwide.
Membership
Membership of the Notaries Society is open to all general notaries practising in England and Wales. There is also provision for associate membership for notaries based overseas, enabling collaboration across jurisdictions.
The Society maintains regular contact with the United Kingdom and Ireland Notarial Forum, further strengthening professional ties within the British Isles and Ireland.
